You’re having a laugh! How your toddler learns from seeing enjoyment

Written by My First Five Years | Nov 18, 2022 12:55:10 PM

When your toddler laughs when everyone around them laughs, they are showing a big step towards making friends. They might not understand why people are laughing but they know that it builds relationships!

Learning how to make friends and build relationships with other people is a skill that takes a long time to master. Your toddler learns about making friends as they watch how you interact with other people, and as they notice how you respond to them.

Our tips for supporting your toddler to learn about relationships:

Make time to have fun

This might be having a dance in the kitchen before you make a meal or making sure you have time to play before the bedtime routine starts.

Follow your toddler’s lead

They are developing their sense of humour and might find quite simple things very funny – so join in with their laughter even if you aren’t quite sure what’s made them giggle!

Remember: your toddler is learning about interactions from watching you

Let your toddler see you enjoying chatting with friends or family, so they can see how you get on with other people.

Repair your relationship if it’s been a tricky day

If you have had a difficult day with your toddler, or if you know you have been tired and grumpy, make extra time for an apology and have a cuddle, play or story at the end of the day.

Your toddler will learn about falling out and making up from these experiences.
