Independence
Your baby is putting themselves in your shoes when they copy your actions. They have been watching what you do and their brains have been working hard trying to connect your body movements to their own. The actions they learn now will help them as they grow and develop.
Language
Actions are largely linked with language. When we talk with our babies, we narrate our actions. So, your baby copying your actions will eventually lead to them linking language they hear too.
Behaviour
Your baby watches how you engage with others. When you see a friend, you may start to see your baby use facial expressions and gestures that copy how you greet people.
Patience and perseverance
It takes a long time for babies to master the actions they see. They may have been practising for a while, but it has gone unnoticed as they have been making gradual progress. So, go on praising your baby’s movements – they could just well be on the cusp of developing a new action!
