A fun and interactive book for your toddler: Where is Baby’s Beach Ball? by Karen Katz

This is a great board book for babies, full of exciting language, new concepts and intrigue as your baby is encouraged to lift the flaps on each page to reveal where the beach ball is.

This colourful, easy-to-read book by American author, Karen Katz, revolves around a ball that was lost by a baby while playing on the beach. As the search for baby's ball begins, we encounter some lovely words and illustrations about the beach and holidays, including some charming sea life characters along the way.

Each page reveals a new location where baby's ball might be. Excitingly, there is a flap to open and we find out if the ball is there.

In terms of language and mathematics, this book has a lot to offer. It inspires you to make up your own sentences, such as, “Shall we see if the ball rolled into the sea?”, “I wonder whether the ball was kicked behind the sandcastle?” and “Did the ball get thrown under the umbrella?” When you lift the flaps, many of the images behind provide opportunities for counting. We were particularly taken with the happy octopus hiding beneath one of the flaps.

If you are visiting the seaside, you could take the book with you and make up your own version.
