What are ‘objects of reference’?

Communication is more than words – in our daily lives we use gestures, facial expressions and even objects in our conversations with others.

The things we use to help communicate with young children are also known as ‘objects of reference’. When babies and young children are first interacting with the world around them, following conversations and concepts can be difficult, so using objects can help your baby make links between things and actions.

How to use objects of reference

Objects of reference are great for communicating transitions through the day. This can be something as simple as showing your baby a clean nappy when it’s time to change, or picking up your keys or pointing out their coat when it’s time to go out.

Objects and choices

Using objects of reference will also help your child make choices from an early age. You could do this with whatever you like. Snack time is a good example, for instance, showing them a yogurt or a banana (or any two favourites) for them to pick from. Using objects like this will help your baby to start to understand exactly what they can choose from.
