Ways to help your baby take the lead in play and conversation
When your baby is playing, you may notice they are drawn to certain toys, types of play or particular things in the great outdoors. Following their interests is great for encouraging confidence and engaging play and conversation.
Take notice
Watch what your baby is drawn to. You might see them stop to look at something or choose a toy or object more often than others. If you spot this, take the time to talk about what they are interested in. Even though they’re not quite ready to have an in-depth conversation about it, this will prepare them to chat and share more with you when they do reach that stage.
Name and give details
If your child is watching something, brings an object to you or is simply spending time focusing on a particular thing, tell them more about it. Name what they are giving their attention to and describe it. For example, “Look at that fluffy blue teddy you have!”
Expand ideas
If there is an item or toy that your child gravitates towards, show them different ways that they can use or play with it. For instance, if they like a ball, show them how to roll it back and forth. As you do so, talk about how it is moving.
