Useful tips when giving instructions to your toddler

Being able to follow instructions is a basic life skill, and one that will help your toddler in countless ways throughout their life, in all sorts of places.

Here are ways you can support your toddler with following instructions:

Make sure they can hear you before you say anything.

If your toddler can’t hear you, they can’t follow instructions. Perhaps move closer to them so they can see you.

Attract their attention by saying their name; this will make it clear who you're talking to.

Make eye contact.

Your toddler will be more receptive to your words if you're looking directly at them.

Use simple language.

It might feel direct but using fewer words will help your toddler to understand instructions. Instead of saying, “Can you go and get your new fluffy teddy?” Say, “Get your teddy.”

After the instruction, pause.

Give your toddler time to listen and understand.

If they don't respond after the pause, then it's ok to repeat the instruction.

Be enthusiastic.

Using a fun, animated voice might inspire and motivate your toddler.
