When you see a pincer grip in action, the thumb tip and pointer fingertip should be touching each other. An open space will be created between the thumb and finger.
If your toddler finds using the tips of their thumb and finger too difficult at the moment, encourage them to pick up items using their pointer, middle and ring fingers, along with their thumb.
The pincer grip will come in very handy for lots of different tasks and activities, like peeling stickers (very important for young children!), fastening Velcro® shoes or tying shoelaces, decorating cakes with sprinkles and doing up zips.
