Mirror play is great for babies and promotes a number of early developmental processes. You might notice your baby studying their own image in the mirror as well as observing and responding to their own movements.
You may want to enhance your baby’s experience of mirror play, so here are a few ideas that might be helpful. For these activities, it is best to use a safety mirror that is suitable for babies.
Peek-a-boo
When your baby is looking at themselves in the mirror, drape a piece of fabric over it, so that the mirror is blocked. While playing, lift the blanket every so often, saying “peek-boo!”.
Puppet show
Bring some of your child’s favourite toys along to join in the fun! Sit with your child and use familiar teddies and toys as puppets, making them move and dance. Observe as your baby tracks their movements with their eyes, and encourage them to join in.
Copycats
Sit or lie together with your baby in front of the mirror. Pull different facial expressions and encourage them to copy. You could also imitate expressions and noises that your child makes.
