There are many (many) brilliant picture books about poo out there, but this story about a little mole who wakes up one day to find someone has done their business on his head is a true classic.
On his mission to work out who has left him this unpleasant present, the little mole marches off – with the poo resting on his head like a little brown hat! He visits other animals, examining their toilet habits for evidence, until finally he finds the culprit and exacts his (hilarious) revenge.
As well as making the whole family laugh out loud, the story is illustrated in a soft, crayon-like style giving even the least pleasant aspects of the story quite a lovely look. The illustrator, Wolf Erlbruch, captures so much character in the animal’s expressions that you would be forgiven for thinking they might hop of the page and start having a conversation.
Lots of children find poo hilarious, but can also find it scary or stressful when they are the ones doing it. This can be especially true if they are beginning to use a toilet, or going to the bathroom somewhere new.
Talking about how natural it is to poo, and making it a fun experience through sharing silly stories, can help your child normalise the idea in their own mind. It might even offer an opportunity for them to talk to you about what it is they find hard, and ask questions to help you help them feel more confident using the toilet for a poo.
Whatever the reason you pick it up, we hope you love The Story of the Little Mole who knew it was none of his business as much as we do!
