Preparing for the first big bed

When is the right time to move to a new bed? The only people that know that answer is the family involved. There is no right or wrong age for a child to move into a big bed – it all depends on when you think your child is ready, or when you feel it is necessary.

The first night in a big bed is a huge step for you all. Your toddler is growing up quickly and outgrowing things by the day. So, if you're about to transition from a cot to a bed, here are some pointers to guide you.

Choosing bed and duvet sets

You could visit a bed showroom and let your toddler sit and lie on several beds. Include them in choosing their bed cover and duvet set; having a sense of ownership is great for their self-esteem.

Be sensitive

It could be that your toddler is switching to a big bed in preparation for your new baby's transition to the cot, or it could just be that it's time for the big move.

Consider your toddler's feelings, regardless of the cause of the move. Their cot may provide a sense of security and comfort, and although part of them wants to have more independence your toddler might find changes unsettling.

Timing

Spend time getting used to the bed before the first night. Read books, encourage daytime naps or hug a favourite bear in the new bed. Establishing a connection with the bed can make it feel cosy and special.

If you can, avoid moving to a new bed if there are other changes happening at the same time, such as toilet training, a new baby arriving or starting nursery.

Read stories

Look for stories that reflect the transition from cot to bed. Make them personal by giving the character your toddler’s name, so they believe the books are about them and their new bed!

Maintain routine

Continue to follow your bedtime routine. Throughout the day, give plenty of attention and reassurance. And finish the day with a relaxing, predictable sleep routine.

The first night – things to consider

Safety

You might find your toddler comes to you during the night – they may need a drink, a hug, or they might be a bit scared. It can be hard when you’re half asleep but try to pay attention to what they're saying and reassure them.

If you have an adventurous toddler who enjoys their newfound nocturnal freedom, make sure the area around the bed is safe for them to walk around. Perhaps double-check how safe it will be to get to your room in the middle of the night, and remove any wires or trip hazards.

Comfort in light

Some children sleep better with a night light in their room or when light from the house enters through the bedroom door left ajar.

Know that they will learn to love their bed

It might feel very frustrating for the first few nights, especially if your toddler is making the most of being able to hop out of bed whenever they want to. Try to remember that this is a phase, not the new normal, and that once your toddler is comfortable with their new bed things will settle down again.
