Your baby's mouth is key to understanding the rest of their body
Using their mouth to explore their hands and feet helps your baby to develop awareness of their body.
When they move, your baby’s brain receives information from proprioceptors in their muscles, tendons and joints. Your baby combines this with information from their sense of touch to understand their body position.
Uncovered hands and feet can explore more
Their mouth plays an important role in helping your baby to learn about themselves and about objects. You will notice that as soon as they can control their movements, they bring objects to their mouth to explore them.
So, when you can, give your baby time with their hands and feet uncovered so they can move and explore and develop their awareness of their body.
