Mirror, mirror on the wall: why it's great to look in the mirror with your baby

Your baby might be starting to notice their reflection in a mirror, looking at it intently, or pausing when they see themselves. Noticing their reflection is such an exciting development for you and your baby, plus it's another way to fill some time in a long day!

Here are some reasons why your baby noticing their reflection in the mirror should be celebrated:

  • Noticing their reflection is an important step on the journey to self-awareness. Scientists don't think they know the baby in the mirror is them, but they'll still be fascinated by the face looking back (along with your face, which they know so well!).
  • Mirror play gives your baby the opportunity to explore interactions and can add some variety to 'serve and return' interactions (you can read more about 'serve and return' here).
  • Mirror play can encourage reluctant tummy-timers to have a go at tummy time and to lift their head, and so build their core strength (we love a skill that supports other ones, too).
  • Mirror play can calm an upset baby. Sometimes a distraction can help your baby to regulate; taking them to look at themselves in a mirror gives them a chance for a cuddle, which is great to help them to settle, and they can look at something new and interesting.
