Making sense of space
Did you know, by moving in a variety of ways your baby is developing their spatial perception? Spatial perception helps us understand our bodies in relation to the environment.
When babies start to move around, they learn much more about the spaces they are in.
Your baby is learning to move in more ways now: rolling, wriggling, crawling or perhaps pulling themselves up into a standing position. This is a great stage of their development as there is so much going on.
Every time they move, your baby will make more sense of things like how they move their limbs and where they ended up!
They can use this information to help build a picture of their surroundings and will eventually begin to understand more about distances between themselves and other objects.
Learning about space is a skill they'll need throughout their life.
While they are learning, your baby will probably bump into objects quite a bit—let's face it, we all still do! Yet it’s amazing that they’re learning how to stop themselves from bumping into things from such a young age.
With every movement made, they learn more about how to manage their body in space. Through this learning they’ll discover how to adapt movements on various surfaces, when to change direction and know when to stop.
So, while your baby is moving around right now, they are leading their own investigations into the space they are living and playing in.
