Knocking down tower blocks – what is your baby learning?
We don’t think children need lots of toys, but we are big fans of stacking blocks because as your child grows they will use them in lots of different ways and learn multiple things from them, including cause and effect.
Exploring results of actions
You might have noticed your baby is becoming more and more interested in the effect that their actions have on the things around them. One of the ways in which they learn about the world around them is by exploring cause and effect, so understanding how one thing might cause another to happen.
Seeing it in action
Blocks can help your baby to see cause and effect in action; you could build a tower together for them to knock down and they will see the effect of what they do. They might want to repeat this over and over again, and may notice that sometimes the blocks fall further away, or that sometimes they have to hit the tower twice to make it fall.
And after all the concentration it takes to stack them up, it's a thrilling feeling to have the freedom to send the blocks tumbling down!
