Keeping your baby safe on the swings

Now that your baby is sitting up and enjoying watching the world around them, it’s likely that your local park will become a regular haunt. When it comes to putting them in a swing for the first time, here are some safety reminders to keep everyone smiling (or at least upright – not all babies react joyfully to a first swing!).

What type of swing?

Ensure it's sturdy – the ones that have a frame to support your baby and a bar between their legs are best. Also make sure that they are sat on their bottom, and don't try to kneel or pull themselves up.

Opt for non-slip clothing

Check that your baby's clothing won't be too slippery on swings or slides. Some snowsuits and rompers, particularly waterproof ones, can be a bit tricky to navigate on playground surfaces (although the extra padding of a jacket or all-in-one can come in handy for keeping your baby safely snug in their swing seat).

Safety in numbers (swings are for solos)

It may sound a little obvious, but swings are designed for one child per seat, so don’t try to put them on together with an older sibling, cute as the photo opportunity might be!

If you sit on a swing holding your baby, keep your motion gentle. For a real swinging experience though, your baby is best in their own swing.

Check the space around them

Also, before you start swinging your baby, make sure that the space around them is clear. Other children can easily be knocked by swings, especially if they are less aware of their surroundings. Keep checking the space behind and in front of your baby as you push, and be ready to grab the swing with both hands in case another child runs past.

Is it too hot to handle (or cold, for that matter)?

If the swing has metal fixtures or handles, they can quickly become very hot in the summer. Touch to check the temperature before using them – they may be too hot for your baby to hold on to. Likewise, swing handles and bars can get very cold in winter, so bring gloves along, ideally ones with a bit of grip.

Don't be disappointed if their reaction isn't what you expected!

It's a big moment putting your baby in the swing for the first time. As parents, we anticipate their glee at this brilliant new experience; and some babies take to it straight away. But don't be disappointed if your baby looks a little non-plussed, or even doesn't like it one bit. It's all new, and there will be other days for a go on the swing or other park equipment.
