It’s not only words that are powerful when it comes to communication
Did you know that Thomas Edison, famous for inventing the light bulb, among other popular devices, communicated secretly with his wife using Morse Code? Today, you probably tap and gesture with your baby without even thinking about it, but this silent language is a powerful form of communication and bonding.
What is Morse Code?
Morse Code was a genius invention originally used to convey messages securely using a sequence of clicks and taps. These sounds could be sent via radio communications. Morse Code later became a written form of communication when it was realised that the sounds of the clicks and taps could be written as dots and dashes.
How did Edison use it?
Edison and his wife, Mina, were keen to be able to have private conversations and to be able to secretly communicate with each other while Mina’s family was around.
Morse Code could also be carried out using finger gestures, as Edison and Mina used it. They tapped codes on each other's hands using their fingers.
Apparently, Edison proposed to Mina using Morse Code, by tapping the words “Will you marry me?” onto her hand, to which she tapped back, “Yes.”
The little gestures you use with your baby
Although you most probably won’t use Morse Code with your baby (!), you might use some unconscious hand gestures without thinking about it – that little double squeeze of the hand to offer reassurance or stroking hands and arms during cuddle time. You may even tap your fingers when you are thinking. Your baby will be watching it all and taking in that actions can still have just as much power as words.
