How a change of position helps your baby’s development

We all frequently hear about how tummy time supports our baby’s development, but having time in other positions also helps them to develop balance, strength and control.

You might feel that your baby is trying to sometimes stand, as they push their feet and try to straighten their legs when you hold them. They are a long way from having the strength and control to support their weight. However, being held upright can stimulate your baby’s balance and help them practise holding their head and body steady.

As well as tummy time each day, why not try some of these different positions and see what your baby prefers?

  • Hold your baby on your lap facing you – great for some face-to-face conversation and a chance for them to feel their feet on your lap.
  • Give your baby a few moments lying on their back after a nappy change – another good chance for a chat!
  • Hold your baby facing away from you and have a walk around the house – or use a carrier to give them a different view of the world.
