Higher, higher: How can playing on a swing support your child’s development?
Swinging is great fun and has many benefits for your child’s development:
- It can be calming, or exciting. Gentle swinging can be relaxing and faster swinging can be stimulating.
- It develops gross motor skills; moving legs and body to swing, holding body position as the swing moves.
- It helps your child strengthen their grip which supports fine motor skills.
- It stimulates the vestibular system which supports your child to develop their posture and balance.
- It provides an opportunity to explore risk.
- It provides opportunities to think about taking turns and responding to how others feel.
- It stimulates different areas of the brain as your child coordinates their movements.
