For a while, your baby's primary form of communication will be crying. You might be hearing your baby cry more than you ever expected to, and no-one can really prepare you for that.
New territory for you both
You and your baby have just entered a completely new world, and you're both working hard to make sense of all that is going on. Although you may feel overwhelmed at times, be comforted by the fact that you are learning together.
Tuning into your baby's non-crying sounds
Every baby is unique – as is every family. On some days, your baby will cry a lot, but on others, there will be fewer tears.
Your baby will also use other sounds to communicate; you may hear little grunts or throaty noises. When you hear the little noises, try to respond to your baby in a jovial way. They are beginning to understand the basics of a two-way conversation.
