Your baby's ability to control their head is one of the earliest physical skills they will learn. You might notice they are starting to tilt their head when looking at something close to them, which indicates they’re getting stronger.

Beginning to control their head is an important part of your baby’s development as this is the first step to controlling their balance, posture and coordination.

Why is gaining control of the movements of their head important?

  • A still head gives your baby a reference point for their balance system – this will help them to adjust movements of other muscles to maintain their position.
  • Steady balance helps your baby use their other senses to explore the world – when they can maintain their balance they can reach towards objects to touch and hold them.
  • Controlling movements enables your baby to watch objects and turn towards things that interest them.
  • Good balance and posture will be important for a range of tasks in the future – being able to maintain balance and posture will help your baby when they eat, write, draw, paint and build.

How can you help your baby to develop strength and control of their movements?

Tummy time is a great way to help your baby develop strength and control – as their strength develops, you can provide interesting toys and objects for them to look at during tummy time.

Time to move – having lots of time to move will help your baby develop strength and control, so give them time for an extra wriggle at the end of nappy changing or when getting them dressed!
