Handy tips for dealing with separation anxiety

You may have experienced signs of separation anxiety from your baby. They might be upset and clingy when it's time to leave you; this struggle to say goodbye and separate is because of the close bond you've formed. Separation anxiety is a completely normal part of the journey of being a parent, but it doesn’t make it less upsetting or tricky to deal with. These three key tips should help.

Little and often

Try slowly building up the time that you spend away from your baby. A good way to do this could be in your own home. For example, invite a family member or friend round who your baby is comfortable with, and get your baby to stay with them while you are out of the house for small periods.

You could try this by simply walking around the block or to the corner shop to start with, before working up to longer separation times.

Be positive

When you are saying bye to your baby, smile! Acting positively will help your baby see the separation in a more positive way.

Don’t sneak out (we know it can be tempting!)

Always say ‘Goodbye’. Although this can be hard if your baby is upset or clingy, it helps them know they can trust you and gives them a routine they can understand.

And remember that this anxiety will eventually pass, or at least get a little easier for all of you.
