Get cooking: why not try this simple biscuit recipe?
We often feel the need to take over and help to get the perfect biscuits. But it's not the final biscuit that is important here, it's the process of making the biscuits.
What you need
- 400g plain flour
- 200g unsalted butter
- 200g granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- Dash of vanilla extract
What to do
- Pre heat the oven to 180C.
- Beat the butter in a bowl until soft and creamy.
- Add the egg, sugar and vanilla extract.
- Sift and fold in the flour until it forms a dough.
- Roll out until it is half a centimetre thick and cut into shapes.
- Line a baking tray with baking paper and put your biscuits on the tray.
- Bake for 10 minutes, or until light brown.
- Let the biscuits cool before eating or decorating them.
What might your child learn
Let your child do each step of the process themselves, (apart from putting their biscuits into and taking them out of the oven), just help them if they get stuck.
- They will learn about number, measure, quantity, texture and change.
- They will use and develop their gross and fine motor skills as they measure, mix, pour, stir and roll.
- They will learn about sequences and following instructions.
