Recast
Recasting is when you repeat back to your toddler what they say to you, with gentle corrections and added detail. For instance, if they point to a dog and say “og," you could recast this comment by saying, “Yes, a big dog."
Commentate
As you and your toddler carry out actions and activities through the day, provide a running commentary on what’s happening.
For instance, if they are playing with cars, sit beside them and talk about what they are doing: “I see you have the red car now, you are making it move quickly past the green car!”
You could even narrate your own actions too, “I am going to put some bread in the toaster to make us some yummy, crunchy toast.”
Take turns
When your child communicates with you, give them time to take in what you are saying and have a go at responding with their own thoughts and ideas.
Provide plenty of eye contact, gestures and patience.
It can be hard not to jump in when there is a long pause, but remember: your toddler needs time to think before they respond!
