Food for little fingers
Looking for some simple ideas for finger foods? This sweet and savoury mixture will serve up some tasty snacks while giving your baby a good fine motor workout too!
- Toast strips
Lightly toast some bread, spread a thin layer of peanut butter on top and cut into thin strips (only do this if you’ve given your baby a small amount of peanut butter before).
- Avocado wedges
Cut slices of avocado into thin strips and serve. Ensure the pieces are soft.
- Sweet potato chips
Peel and slice a sweet potato into chips lengths, before baking for 15 minutes or until soft.
- Banana strips
Separate a banana into three pieces, slice each in half and serve.
- Pancake strips
Use a baby-friendly pancake recipe to make some delicious homemade pancakes and then cut them into strips (pancakes usually freeze really well).
- Pasta
Well-cooked fusilli pasta is a great finger food that's also easy to hold.
- Shredded chicken
Cooked chicken shredded into finger food lengths is a nutritious and interesting finger food.
- Grated cheese
A quick and easy finger food is simple grated cheese – it’s also great for practising fine motor skills.
- Peas
These might be quite difficult for your baby to pick up at first, but peas make an excellent finger food and good for fine motor exercise!
- Cucumber fingers
Cut into thin fingers, cucumber makes a refreshing finger food and is brilliant for teething babies. Be careful to watch them with the rind which can be difficult to chew.
