Are you taking the sides off your child’s cot, or perhaps they’re moving from your bed into their own? Here are five of our favourite books that will set the scene for bedtime and support your child in settling into a new routine.

We've included Amazon links for these books; if you use these links to buy a book, MFFY may collect a share of sale or some form of commission.

1. Maisy's Bedtime by Lucy Cousins

This simple and relatable book recounts all the events that happen in the lead up until bedtime. In classic Maisy style, the illustrations are vivid and engaging and the story is warm and easy to follow. Brilliant for establishing a bedtime routine.

2. Can't You Sleep, Little Bear? by Martin Waddell & Barbara Firth

This warm and heartfelt book follows a young bear’s struggles as he tries to get to sleep, which he finds difficult because he is afraid of the dark. Big Bear comes up with ingenious ways to get Little Bear to sleep, which may in turn help your little one become less fearful at bedtime.

3. The Biggest Bed in the World by Lindsay Camp

Poor dad seems to be getting no sleep as his large family occupies his bed. The tale is funny and warm, and shows that when dad eventually does get everyone in their own beds, he is the one who can’t get to sleep!

4. Goodnight Everyone by Chris Haughton

This book is both peaceful and compelling in design. It follows a series of animals who are getting ready to sleep and yet a little bear just wants to play. We guarantee that you and your child will be feeling much more peaceful and sleepy by the final page.

5. Mole's Bedtime Story by David Wood and Richard Fowler

A tale about a mole trying to find the most comfortable bed for a good night's sleep. This interactive book lets you slide the mole into each bed until he finds the one that is exactly right for a restful sleep. Great for supporting children’s language as it contains lots of describing words.
