Feeling tired? Time shared during everyday moments is just as good as play
Does it seem like months since you've had a good night’s sleep? Even if you are starting to feel like you're adjusting to parenthood, some days will feel really hard. When you are tired or busy you might get to the end of the day and wonder if you had any time to play with your baby.
There is a myth that babies only learn when you have decided it is playtime, or have set up a special activity. The reality is that some of the simplest things you do every day are great for your baby’s development.
Sleep will vary, so don't feel bad for being tired
Your baby might still wake several times a night. Even if they have started to sleep for a little longer, it is not unusual for a baby's sleep to vary from night to night, especially during their first year. So, there might be some days when you just feel exhausted.
Slow down and make the most of everyday moments
Our tip for those days is to slow down and focus on your interactions with your baby during caregiving routines, such as nappy changing, feeding or getting dressed. These everyday actions provide brilliant opportunities to interact with your baby.
Slow down your routine, chat with your baby about what you are going to do before you do it and as you carry out each action. Allow a little longer so they can have an extra wriggle, or you can have a face to face chat before you move on to something else.
Slowing down your caregiving routines gives you time to strengthen your bond with your baby, and supports their learning and development. And doing things a little slower might make a day when you feel tired just that bit easier.
