Chatty children and their love of talking

Written by My First Five Years | Mar 24, 2023 11:57:00 AM

Have you noticed your child is talking so much, and not necessarily sticking to one trail of thought? It's very typical for this to happen in their development as they are constantly processing new information and making connections between ideas.

Your child may often move quickly between topics when they are talking because their minds are still developing.

Their brain is still making sense of the world around them, and they are developing the skill of organising their thoughts in a linear or sequential manner like adults do.

You might also find that your child is curious and has a lot of questions about the world, so they may jump from topic to topic as they explore different thoughts, ideas and concepts. It’s a normal part of their development and can be encouraged to nurture their curiosity and creativity.

We like this quote by Catherine M. Wallace, a British historian and writer, as it encourages us to enjoy and take in these moments with our children:

“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don’t listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won’t tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”
