Asking for help is ok

Becoming a parent is one of the biggest moments in your life. It can be something that turns your life upside down – in the best possible way! As rewarding as being a new parent is, it is a huge task, and everyone needs a little help along the way… even if it is just someone to chat to or hold the baby while you drink a cup of tea while it’s still hot.

Here are some tips for when it comes to asking and accepting help as a new parent:

Be specific.

When it comes to help, some parents may want to have break from their baby, where others might want someone to tackle some of the household chores. If someone asks “do you want help?”, be clear with exactly what you would like them to help you out with. Whether that is for someone to pick up a few groceries at the shops, take your dog around the block, or take care of the baby for half an hour while you wash your hair.

Think about who you would like to help you.

It's important to feel comfortable, so accept help from somebody that you feel at ease with, and you know won’t stress you out!

Remember – it is also ok to say ‘no.’

On a similar note, it's also fine to turn down help from people if you don't want it. Having people around can feel overbearing at times, especially when there's a new baby in the mix.

Get organised, just in case.

If you don't have friends or family close by to help, planning ahead might take the pressure off. This can be things such as pre-booking supermarket deliveries, and cooking and freezing meals. Lots of household items and toiletries can also be ordered through an online subscription service, too.
