There's a Rang-Tan in My Bedroom - By James Sellick and Fran Preston-Gannon

This is a wonderful story about an orangutan, called Rang-tan, who flees the rain forest and as she is terrified of what is going on there. Rang-tan makes her way into a little girl's room and instantly causes chaos. What Rang-tan is actually attempting to do is to teach the small girl about her home, but the girl doesn't understand.

Thankfully, the girl decided to ask as to why Rang-tan was in her room. Rang-tan offers an open and honest explanation that is both thought-provoking and emotive. This narrative focuses on a current environmental issue and attempts to raise awareness about the repercussions of human actions and mass industry. It is written beautifully and Rang-tan makes your heart melt when she describes what is happening to her rainforest.

The book ends with information about orangutans and palm oil. If you wish, there are suggestions for how you could help.

If reading to a baby: Talk about some of the objects you can see in the child’s room.

If reading to a toddler: See if they can point out the Orangutan on each page and other objects.

If reading to a child: Have a conversation about ways you can help the environment at home.
