The Lullaby Trust shares safe sleep recommendations for the winter months

Now that the temperature has dropped, you might be wondering about the best ways to keep your baby warm at night. With the rises in energy bills, many families may be concerned about how best to make sure that their children are warm and comfortable at bedtime.

Advice for sleeping in cots and Moses baskets

For babies who are sleeping in cots and Moses baskets, The Lullaby Trust suggests:

  • Opt for multiple thin layers of blankets rather than thick sheets.
  • Do not add extra blankets if your baby sleeps in a sleeping bag. If you are worried about the cold, dress your baby in warmer bedtime clothing, or opt for a sleeping bag with a higher tog instead.
  • Firmly tuck in sheets and blankets.
  • Put your baby to sleep in the feet to foot position.

Advice for babies who co-sleep or bedshare

The Lullaby Trust’s suggestions for babies who co-sleep or bedshare are:

  • Avoid loose bedding – using a baby sleeping bag is best. Use a higher tog for colder nights.
  • Keep adult bedding away from your baby to prevent overheating or suffocation. Your own body heat will keep your baby warm.
  • Try not to let pets or other children in the bed with your baby.

Things to avoid:

  • Co-sleeping if you or another parent has been consuming alcohol.
  • Hot water bottles or putting your baby’s cot too close to a heater or radiator.
  • Putting your baby to sleep in hats or outdoor clothing.
  • Cot bumpers.
  • Weighted blankets.
