Giraffes Can’t Dance has been a favourite book among children and their families for quite some time. This is a funny and touching story about a giraffe called Gerald, and how he grows to accept his unique ways.
When your child is upset or frustrated and says things such as, “I’m not your best friend” or “I don’t like you,” it can be really difficult not to feel upset or angry yourself.
It might help to think about what your child really means; it takes us a long time to develop the skills needed to recognise our emotions and to talk to other people about them. When you tell your child to do something they would prefer not to do and they respond with, “Well, I’m not your best friend,” think about what they really mean. They are saying, “I don’t like having to brush my teeth,” or “I wanted to finish playing and I am upset that you said I have to stop.”

Sometimes it is helpful to remember we are learning and practising with them. You might have days when you feel calm and confident about supporting them and other days when you feel less sure. You may recognise that when you are tired, stressed or anxious, supporting your child is more difficult.
This might be a familiar question, but one research study suggests a more accurate question might be have they ever slept through?
Cook it! is a book all about how our hands can help out at home, from measuring ingredients, spreading them, cooking them and even washing up! This book is great for young children who want to help with household tasks but may lack a little confidence in doing so. The bright and simple illustrations in this book also help make it more accessible for children who may want to have a go at exploring the book independently.
We love sharing our recommendations for books to read with your children, but we thought parents might like some ideas for books they might enjoy too. Here are five, light, easy-to-read, uplifting, sometimes laugh-out-loud books for parents of young children.
