First holiday
There is no perfect age to take your child on their first ever holiday. However, some may find it easier – especially when it comes to air travel – to wait until your baby is more settled into a sleep routine to do so.
Planning where to go is also important. Babies and young children have a much harder time regulating their own temperature, so you might find it better to go somewhere that isn’t too hot. However, you can still take extra precautions with your child, ensuring that they have access to plenty of shade, a hat with a neck flap, plenty of fluids and a suitable sunscreen.
When planning your holiday, carefully considering your accommodation is also important. You might want to be closer to local amenities if your child is first walking or still using a buggy or pram – pushing or carrying a heavy toddler up hills and steps in hot weather is no fun! Also check out how child-friendly your hotel or apartment is by checking out facilities and reviews from past customers.
There is also a lot to think about when it comes to packing for your child. It is very easy to overload your suitcase! Two sets of clothes for each day is a good rule to stick to, with lots of light, loose clothing if you are going somewhere warm. If your child is still in nappies, bring your usual changing equipment – there are also a lot of travel-friendly bits available that may make the trip a little easier for you.
Bringing a few familiar things from home is also a great idea. For example, you might bring your child’s favourite teddy and blanket, and things that comfort them at sleep time. This can make them feel a bit more at ease in a new place.
It is also good to try to stick to a loose routine when you are away. Try to keep naps and sleeps at a similar time to their usual schedule at home, even if that means them having a nap in the shade in their pushchair by the pool.
