Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! – by Mo Willems

The bus driver needs your help, he needs to go for a little while and just needs you to make sure the pigeon doesn’t drive the bus.  

In this book, the pigeon tries different ways to persuade your child to let them drive the bus. Your child might relate to the pigeon’s disappointment when stopped from driving the bus and his attempts to persuade your child to change their mind.  

You and your child could chat about the different ways the pigeon tries to persuade you to let them drive the bus. Does your child think the pigeon should be able to drive?  

This story helps your child to think about different perspectives and puts them in the position of needing to enforce a boundary. This could be a good starting point for a chat about why sometimes we cannot do the things we want. #AD 

Reading Tips: 

If reading to a baby: Your baby might be interested in the pictures on each page. Notice what they look at and talk about those things.  

If reading to a toddler: Talk about how the pigeon is feeling, “I think the pigeon is sad because they can’t drive the bus.”  

If reading to a child: Chat with your child about why the pigeon can’t drive the bus. What does your child think should happen? How would the driver feel if the pigeon drove the bus? This story can really help your child to think about different points of view.
