Birth Playlist? Here are the most popular tracks...

An analysis of over 60 Spotify playlists (with 16,000 tracks in total) has revealed which songs and artists are most popular to give birth to – and the results may be a little surprising!  

A lot of prospective parents like to turn to music to get themselves through childbirth. The top ten childbirth playlist songs were revealed as follows: 

  1. Jack Johnson – Better Together 
  2. Jason Mraz – I Won’t Give You Up 
  3. Adele – Make You Feel My Love 
  4. Ben Howard – Only Love, The Lumineers – Ho Hey 
  5. Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud, Norah Jones – Come Away With Me, James Bay – Let It Go 
  6. The Beatles – Here Comes The Sun 
  7. Jose Gonzalez – Heartbeats, Elton John – Your Song 
  8. John Legend – All Of Me, Xavier Rudd – Follow The Sun 
  9. Christina Perri – A Thousand Years, Bon Iver – Holocene 
  10. Sam Smith – Stay With Me, James Vincent McMorrow – Higher Love, Fleetwood Mac – Dreams 

Overall, Better Together by Jack Johnson was the most popular track, featuring on 35 out of the 60 playlists. Calm, slower songs seemed to be the most featured style of music.  

Ed Sheeran was the artist featured the most across the playlists, making 169 appearances. Here are the top ten artists that appeared the most.  

  1. Ed Sheeran 
  2. The Beatles 
  3. Coldplay 
  4. Taylor Swift 
  5. Fleetwood Mac 
  6. Jack Johnson 
  7. Florence and the Machine 
  8. Adele 
  9. Beyonce 
  10. Sam Smith 

Across the playlists, the average BPM was 118. Songs that have this BPM are Patricia by Florence and the Machine, and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit – which probably isn’t on many birth playlists! However, it was found that the average BPM of the songs in the top ten was actually 110, which is the BPM of the top track Better Together. 

Spotify USA have collaborated with an obstetrician, Dr Jacque Moritz to create a scientifically designed birth playlist. This features a wide range of artists, including Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire, amongst others, and can be found here.
