With lots of stories in the media about increases to the cost of living, we wanted to share some of our top tips for adventures to be found on our doorstep that don’t cost a thing, from story time at your local library to getting creative at a gallery.
Libraries are an incredible resource for babies and children of all ages. As well as having a huge range of books to borrow, read and treasure with your child for free, libraries often have free rhyme time and story time classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. These are fun to join in with and a great way to meet other parents, carers and children. And you can pick out some new stories to read together while you’re there or make the most of the child-friendly spaces to enjoy a story somewhere new.
Many museums and galleries run free classes for babies and young children, from sensory classes for babies to creative sessions for older babies, toddlers and children. While you’re there, you could take a look to see if there’s any art or exhibitions that inspire you too. Children often love to look at art with you, and you could talk about which ones you like and why. It might even inspire you to create your own artwork together!
Many community centres run free or very reasonably priced groups for parents, carers and children. These can be a great way to meet new people, and sometimes you can learn a new skill, such as baby massage. There are often toys or games for your child to try out while you both make new friends.
Many bookshops offer story time sessions or read and make sessions, where you can listen to a children’s book and then join in with craft activities. These can be a great way to listen to new stories and get creative together. Why not contact your local bookshop and see what they offer?
