I’m a firework - music as a sensory experience

What you need

  • Music or a soundtrack with firework sounds – you can find these on streaming services.
  • Ribbons, streamers or pieces of fabric.

If you like classical music look for Handel’s ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’. If you prefer something more modern, Katy Perry's 'Firework' is always a good choice!

The steps

  • Make some space so you have room to move and dance.
  • Put the ribbons, streamers or fabric where your child can reach them.
  • Play the music and choose a streamer or ribbon. Encourage your child to choose one too.
  • Start dancing and moving, timing your gestures to the beat of the music.
  • Encourage your child to move to the music too, using the streamers or ribbons to make shapes in the air.

Benefits for your child

  • Matching movements to music allows your child to integrate multiple sensory inputs.
  • Embracing the creativity of becoming a firework (or any other object) lets your child try out movements they might not otherwise make, helping them build up their gross motor skills and balance.

Building on

  • Pick different music, and try to become other objects, places or animals. For example, play Gustav Holst's 'The Planets' or 'Rocket Man' by Elton John and dance like you're in outer space.
