You can do this too – use action words as you play

What you need

  • Playdough, you can buy some or use our simple recipe to make your own
  • Time and space to enjoy playdough with your toddler

What to try

  • Have a bit of playdough each; as you play with your piece, talk about what you’re doing.
  • Use lots of words to describe your actions, but keep it simple. For example, say, “I’m going to squeeze it,” or simply, “push down!” when you squash some dough.
  • Pause so your toddler can watch what you’re doing and think about what you’ve said.
  • You don’t need to ask your toddler to copy you, unless they want to.
