Playing with pronouns – Who can do it? I can! Who wants to play it? Me!

What to do

  1. Think of times when you can get your toddler to respond with either “I can,” or “Me.”
  2. Think of questions where you can answer, “I can,” or “Me.”

Good to know

The more your toddler hears pronouns in daily language, the easier it becomes to understand them.

Examples of when you could use pronouns might be:

In the park, say, “Who can run up the hill?” If your toddler says either, “I can,” or “Me,” respond enthusiastically.

While eating, ask, “Who's eating a sandwich?” Listen for your toddler to respond with, “Me.” If they say their own name, you could say “Yes you are!” Then ask another question that encourages you to answer, “Me.” So, “Who is drinking a cup of tea? Me!” Hearing you use pronouns in the right way supports your toddler’s growing understanding.
