What happened today? An end-of-day activity to encourage why questions

What to try

  • Choose a time towards the end of the day when your child is relaxed and happy to chat.
  • Tell them about your day, include experiences that are familiar to them.
  • Pause and give them time to comment or ask a question.
  • If they don’t ask a ‘why’ question, you could ask one yourself. For example, “I went to buy my sandwich and there was a baby crying in the shop. I wonder why they were crying?”
