What you need
What to do
- Go for a walk somewhere with trees.
- Encourage your child to collect as many interesting leaves from the ground as they can find.
- Find a space where you can tip the leaves out to look at them (you could bring them home to do this).
- Look at the leaves together and see if you can find any that are similar.
- Give your child time to look at all the leaves and group them independently, before you start making suggestions.
- Help your child wash their hands after they’ve finished sorting their collection.
Good to know
This is a great activity for Autumn, when there are lots of leaves on the ground. But it can be adapted for any time of year. Just think about items your child can find, collect and look at – this could be shells at the beach or sticks and twigs on a walk.
