We're not baking – we're placing objects in valleys and on mountains

What you need

  • A muffin tray
  • Some muffin cases (Silicon cases work best, but if you don’t have any, plastic cups are fine)

What to do

  • Put the muffin cases in the muffin tray, some the right way up and some upside down. These will be valleys and mountains – your baby is unlikely to understand this concept; this is purely for your entertainment.
  • Gather some small, non-chokeable toys, such as pom poms, blocks, play food, people or balls.
  • Place some of the objects in and on the valleys and mountains.
  • Place others around the tray.
  • Demonstrate how to pick up an object and place it in or on a muffin case.
  • Invite your baby to move the objects around, bringing them in and out of cases and shifting them from one case to another.

Make sure your toddler is fully supervised during this activity.

Good to know

You could tell a story about the mountains and valleys by narrating your movements; this may encourage your toddler to move objects about.
