Walk and talk – play this simple game to encourage conversation

What you need 

• Pictures of a few things you will see on your walk such as shops, local landmarks, animals or plants – these could be on your phone, printed or drawn.  

What to do 

• Give your child the pictures and go for a walk.  
• Ask them to see if they can spot the things.  
• When they find something, tick it off, put the photo in a bag or move the photo to another album on your phone.  
• Ask them to tell you more about what they’ve seen.  
• Add a little bit of detail to what they say, for example, if your child comments, “It’s a cat.” You could reply, “Yes a little, orange cat. That one has stripes.”

Good to know 

Your child will be interested in learning new words and is likely to enjoy hearing and repeating more complex vocabulary now. If they have a particular interest, using words linked to that interest can be a brilliant way to get them to use more words.
