Visit the library – books support your baby’s understanding of words
What to try
- Visit your local library and look for some ‘my first word’ books. These are usually books with one image per page and one word. Pick a selection to bring home.
- Take some time to look at these books with your baby. Point to the pictures as you say the words and give your baby plenty of time to look at each page.
- The more they see the book, and hear the word connected to each picture, the easier it will be for them to make connections between them.
Good to know
You can often find lovely ‘my first word’ books second hand, too: keep an eye out in your local charity shops or online swap groups. Some are simple, everyday objects but others might be focused on a particular theme or mood.
