Using instructions within your routine – invite your toddler to remember what’s next

What to do

  1. When you go about your normal daily routine try to tell your toddler the next two things that are happening. You might say, “We are getting dressed and then going downstairs.”
  2. Reinforce the message by saying, “So we will get dressed first, then go downstairs.”
  3. When your toddler is dressed, say, “We've got dressed, now we are going...”
  4. Pause and give your toddler time to think and answer.

Good to know

You might need to say the instructions more than once. Your toddler’s memory is beginning to improve but they still need time and repetition to be able to process the requests.
