Twinkle, twinkle! Using nursery rhymes to encourage sensory skills
What you need
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Foil
What to do
- Make a foil star: use a piece of cardboard from a box and cut it into a star shape, then wrap your star in foil.
- Lie your baby on their back on the floor and sit with them, or hold them on your lap.
- Hold the star in front of your baby.
- They might try to reach it, so perhaps hold it out of reach and sing, ‘Twinkle, twinkle little star’.
- Move the star as you sing so that your baby can follow it with their eyes.
Don’t let your baby hold the star without supervision as they will want to explore it with their mouth as well as their hands, and the foil could become a choking hazard.
Good to know
Your baby will be more likely to follow the star if you move it slowly. To help your baby maintain their focus on it, try jiggling it slightly as if it were twinkling.
