This is puzzling! How will your baby lift the pieces up?

What you need

  • One or two chunky jigsaw puzzles (ones without pegs would be ideal)

What to do

  1. Place some pieces of the jigsaw on the floor and others at an angle against the board.
  2. Use a playful voice and try to attract your baby's attention to the pieces.
  3. Watch to see how your baby moves their hands and fingers to lift the pieces.

Good to know

The action of getting their little fingers under the jigsaw pieces to lift is very similar to lifting a loose lid. When they’re successful in picking up a piece, give them lots of praise.

At this stage, they don’t yet have the coordination and skills to insert the pieces into the puzzle.
