What to do
- Ask your child what their name is.
- Once they’ve said it out loud, repeat it back to them in a funny voice. This could be slowly, in a high voice or however you choose.
- If they find it funny, say it again using the same voice.
- See whether they can say their name in the same way.
- If they want to, let them take the lead by asking your name and repeating it in funny voices, too.
Good to know
If your child really likes you saying their name in a particular way, you could sometimes attract their attention by using the funny voice when they’re not expecting it. Hearing their name said in a different way may encourage them to practise saying it for themselves, and make introducing themselves more fun than intimidating.
