Reading stories with sequences is great fun; your toddler can learn to order and join in alongside you. Here are a few of our favourite stories with strong repeated patterns for your toddler to remember and join in with...
- In We’re Going On A Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, every page starts with the same words and the adventure continues.
- In Owl Babies, by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson, every page ends with Bill wailing, “I want my mummy!”
- In Oi Frog! by Kes Gray and Jim Field, the pattern is all in the sounds which repeat throughout and give a very good clue to what’s happening.
- Goodnight Spaceman by Michelle Robinson and Tim Peake has lots of rhyming and follows the sequence of events in the day of the life of an astronaut.
- Any book your toddler loves, and has heard many times, will probably have words and phrases they join in with, which is perfect for remembering sequences too.
Good to know
You will have your own favourites and have lots of fun following the sequence of events in the stories and pictures. You might find that your toddler enjoys being given control of the reading, and uses the pictures along with their memory of the story to retell it to you in their own words – perhaps even remembering and using phrases from the story in the right places along the way.
