Spoon splash! Water play to develop your baby’s spoon handling skills
What you need:
- Something you can use for water play – like a water play table, shallow container or a tray
- Towels or a waterproof sheet to put the tray on (especially if you’re doing this indoors)
- Water play toys
- A variety of spoons
What to try
- Set up a water play table, or large shallow container of water that your baby can reach.
- Place it on your towel or waterproof sheet if necessary.
- Add a few of your baby’s favourite water play toys and spoons to the water.
- Show your baby how to fill the spoons, and then pour the water out with an exciting whoosh and splash.
- Let your baby explore the spoons how they wish.
Good to know
Your baby may want to explore how the trickling water feels on their skin, or simply watch it glisten and reflect.
Your baby might try to drink the water, so make sure the tray is filled with fresh, clean water. Always supervise your baby when they are playing with water.
