Splash then soothe – using baby massage after bath-time

What to try

  • After bathing your baby and drying them, this is a great opportunity to settle and soothe them with a gentle massage.
  • Make sure your baby is cosy and warm before you start.
  • If it suits you and your baby, keep the lights low to add to the calming atmosphere.
  • It can be a nice ritual to let your baby know before you start a massage, or even ask them if it is ok – although of course don’t expect a spoken answer yet!

Be aware of your baby's skin when massaging them – use a gentle touch and before you start, check any oils or lotions that you use are safe for your baby’s skin.

Always support your baby’s wrists and ankles if you lift their arms or legs off the ground to massage them.

Ensure you can see your baby's face and that it is turned to the side so you can see their nose and mouth are not being squashed.
